There are 2.1 million farms in the United States, and 97% of them are FAMILY owned. Yep, you’ve got that right. Some of them are BIG, some of them are LITTLE, and some of them are right in BETWEEN. And even though the size may vary the important part to understand here is that out of 2.1 million farms 2.03 million of them are owned by somebody who looks a lot like you.
"Whether small or large - on the East Coast, West Coast, or the Midwest - family farms produce food and fiber for people all across the U.S. and the world," said Hamer. "It's due in part to information such as this from the Census of Agriculture that we can help show the uniqueness and importance of U.S. agriculture to rural communities, families, and the world."
They’re cleaning house, making dinner, driving to soccer practice, mowing the lawn AND growing the food or materials we enjoy and expect each time we walk through the doors of a store. They are a lot like your family too; we are a lot like your family.
So if we look and act a lot like your family, we probably think a few of the same things too. For example, sustainable agriculture not only embraces our values as a family owned company, but these practices also ensure our future as one too. If we are not wise with our resources and handling of them, they won't be there very long to help support us.
Don’t roll your eyes and click away; we aren’t just filling your ears with another buzzword, this is something we actually care about and want to explore more with you. So what is sustainability? In simplest terms, sustainable agriculture is the production of food, fiber, or other plant or animal products using farming techniques that protect the environment, public health, human communities, and animal welfare.
Throughout the month of September, we will be exploring different areas of sustainability and how we approach them at Cattle Empire. The topics will include:
- Water Reclamation
- Harvest Practices
- Soil Management
- Animal Welfare
We also put together a 20-day photo challenge that we want YOU to participate in with us. There is a photo prompt for each day of the week (M-F) from September 5 thru September 30. Take a picture from that prompt that makes you think of #sustainableagriculture < and follow it up with that hashtag.

We can’t promise you that every operation thinks the same way we do, but what we can promise you that at Cattle Empire, we are doing what it takes to be sustainable, it only makes sense. What are you doing about it?
